Philip Simmons High school is a new school in Berkeley County School district, Charleston, SC. This is the 2nd year the school is open, but the first year my classroom has operated. My class serves students with moderate intellectual disabilities. Each day, we work on learning life skills, vocational skills, and daily living skills to enable my students to become more independent. We would like to start a school garden that we can tend to daily, completing meaningful tasks for my students. We would like to produce a garden that allows us to use home grown produce in our classroom kitchen. A school garden would offer my students the opportunity to advocate for themselves, get hands on experience building and maintaining a garden, and learn the importance of a healthy life style. This project would also grant us the opportunity to work with other classes throughout the school who are studying agriculture, healthy living and life skills.
