"You're Running a Marathon? Why Would You Want to do That?"
Since the day I signed up for the 2017 Philadelphia Marathon this has been the most frequent response I've received. My standard response used to be, "I'm young, in shape, I may only have a certain window to do this so I want to accomplish this now. However, as I thought more & more about how I plan to subject myself to 26.2281 miles of pain I realized I had been responding wrong all along & deep down I knew the true reason why I'm running... My Mom.
My mom, Roseann DeHaven or Rosie as many call her is without a doubt my biggest inspiration in life. I don't think I've ever truly told her that, but I intend to show her that as I run through the streets of Philadelphia on November 19th, 2017. She's battled her entire life & her biggest battle has been against Scleroderma, an auto immune disease which often results in a hardening of tissues & skin making life substantially more difficult & painful.
As she's battled the pain this terrible disease has caused her daily, on race day I hope to show the same type of determination she displayed to me as I grew up. I can assure you your donation to the Tri-State Chapter of the Scleroderma foundation will fuel me towards the finish line where I plan on giving my mom the biggest hug & telling her the true reason I ran... for her. I hope my story can serve as an inspiration for you as well. I urge you to find someone or something in your life that inspires you & challenge yourself to do something on their behalf you never thought you could do. If you would be so kind to donate to my cause, I promise I will remember your generosity with every step I take towards the finish line.
P.S. Shhhhhhh… it’s a surprise! Don’t tell Rosie!!!
