I am a breast cancer survivor. For about eight months, from diagnosis and surgery to chemotherapy and radiation, my life was turned upside down. But, thank God, I survived and am now cancer free.
Once I got clearance from my doctors, I resumed my hobby: running. On my runs, I thought about how blessed I was to not only have survived cancer but to have the ability to once again be in control of my body. The idea of using my newfound strength and hobby for a reason became my motivation to register for the Detroit Free Press International Half Marathon and to raise funds for the Pink Fund.
The Pink Fund is a non-profit organization that provides financial support to help breast cancer patients who are undergoing treatment meet basic (non-medical) financial needs such as making a house payment or making a car or an insurance payment. The reality is this: often, women (and men) undergoing breast cancer treatment lose their jobs and source of income. Paying bills becomes a hardship. The stress of thinking how to pay bills without an income on top of the stress of healing from surgery and undergoing chemo and radiation, makes for a very tense scenario and is counterproductive to healing. I was blessed to have had paid sick leave while I healed. I can't imagine the hardship for those not as fortunate.
So, friends, I am asking for your help. I have set up this CrowdRise fundraiser for the Pink Fund. I appreciate any amount you can give. I can't promise that I will finish the half marathon in record time nor can I promise that my run will be easy. What I can promise is this: I will push myself to finish the race. I can promise that your donation, small or big, is going to a very worthy cause. Finally, I promise to carry you and all those fighting breast cancer and unable to run, in my heart.
