PlayGround is a leading playwright leading incubator and theatre community hub, operator of Potrero Stage: PlayGround Center for New Plays. The mission of PlayGround is to support the development of significant new local voices for the theatre. More than just another play development program, PlayGround creates a complete, 360-degree series of opportunities for our writers and the plays they create. Since its founding in 1994, PlayGround has supported more than 200 early career playwrights, developing and staging over 850 of their original short plays through the Monday Night PlayGround staged reading series and annual Best of PlayGround showcase. PlayGround has also commissioned 73 new full-length plays by 47 of these writers through its Commissioning Initiative (including 8 currently in development) and has directly facilitated the premiere of 25 of those works through its innovative New Play Production Fund and through intentional partnerships with other producers. The combined result of PlayGround’s incubator and accelerator programs is a true theatre community of artists and audience members willing to take risks together and create/support new works of theatre. Over the past two decades, PlayGround has fundamentally changed the face of the Bay Area theatre community and contributed significantly to the writers who are now on the local and national stage. Distinguished alumni include: Lauren Yee, Peter Sinn Nachtrieb, Geetha Reddy, Aaron Loeb, and Garret Jon Groenveld, among others.
