As many of you know Sam, Evan and myself are now playing a lot of squash. Through our involvement in the sport, I took a Board of Directors spot on a 501c3 called, Beyond Walls.
What the organization does is, work with grade school, through high school youth who want and need support in their educational process. The youth meet twice a week and once every other week for almost three hours, each session.
Their time consists of 30-40 minutes of playing and being instructed on squash, with a lot of emphasis on rules, regulations and etiquette. The remainder of the session is devoted to being tutored in their schooling by University of MN students.
This school year we have 72 students, up from 46 last year. Our goals are to get them all out of high school and into College. As we all know, Education is the key for success. The first child in a family, that graduates from high school and college, changes the dynamics of their life as well as the lives of the family.
Making change in a part of society is not magic, and there is no magic key. It takes time and hard work. What is great about Beyond Walls, is almost all funds raised are put to use in the educational process.
The Board is comprised of a group of great people who are all committed to our youth, and we all can get personally involved.
WE are making a difference.
