May 1, 2018 our dad, Bill Borgwardt, lost his short battle with pancreatic cancer. Many of you reading this knew him, and whether as a husband, father, grandpa, friend, or mentor, he was loved and respected by so many.
Shortly after his passing we learned of this charity, Project Purple, that raises funds for pancreatic cancer research and to support patients and their families, through running. Seeing this, we immediately knew it was the perfect opportunity to honor dad's memory.
As most of you know, running has been a passion in our family for a long time. Not sure how that started, since neither mom nor dad were ever really runners, but they were always passionate about supporting our efforts. Whatever the reason, our love for our dad and our love for running make Project Purple a perfect match.
This year pancreatic cancer surpassed breast cancer and became the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. The mission of Project Purple is to find a cure for pancreatic cancer and to improve the lives of patients through support, hope and compassion.
Project Purple provides funding for critical pancreatic cancer research. Project Purple also assists current patients through a Patient Financial Aid program and provides patients with Blankets of Hope care packages.
If you would like to learn more about Project Purple you can visit their website http://www.projectpurple.org.
For now though, we are humbly asking you to support our efforts in memory of our dad. All of us, Julie, Scott, Becky and Lisa, along with our friends, Jill Czarnik and Stacey Kincaid, will be running Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, MN on June 22, 2019. Together, we have a "Team Borgwardt" goal to raise at least $4,000 in his honor to support Project Purple.(Update: Initial goal met 2/7. New goal $7,000!)
Every donation, large or small would be so much appreciated. With your support we hope to meet and surpass that goal so that we can help support patients and families fighting this horrible disease and ultimately find a cure so others don't have to live through what we and many others have experienced.
Thank you so much for reading our story and for any contribution you are able to make!
