Pull for Pride 2018 is a national event benefiting local organizations that provide direct support to LGBTQ youth struggling with homelessness.
At the June 16th event, up to 50 lifter-fundraisers will take turns deadlifting progressively higher weights, aiming to match dollar for pound to support the San Diego Sunburst Youth Housing Project. The deadlift, for the uninitiated, involves stepping up behind a loaded barbell, grasping the bar, standing up with the weight, and setting it back down on the ground. It is a simple lift that is imbued with meaning: coming forward to face a challenge, and succeeding through the simple mechanism of one’s own strength.
The Sunburst Youth Housing Project provides safe and supportive housing for San Diego’s homeless youth, with a special focus on LGBTQ+ and HIV+ youth. The 23-unit facility is located in downtown San Diego at 1640 Broadway, close to City College, public transportation, community health facilities and other essential resources. A major goal of the center is to ensure that youth have easy access to needed services that will support them in maintaining stable housing.
