Hi! My name is Julia - if you didn't ready know, I'm here & queer... Most of my friends and loved ones are too. I have been incredibly fortunate to find myself in supportive communities and environments lately, but that hasn't always been the case - for my friends and other members of the LGBTQ community as well.
About a year ago, I fell into fitness which ended up saving my life (I won't lie - I had a pretty rough go of it for awhile there). I was able to find my self-worth, self-love and strength through a barbell. So hear me out - I decided to compete in a deadlift fundraising competition! This competition encompasses two things I'm passionate about - queerness and lifting. I want to unleash my inner strength to help others.
This event I'm participating in benefits the Ali Forney Center, which is an organization that strives to provide housing and support to LGBTQ youth when the people that they trusted the most ended up rejecting them for who they truly are. LGBTQ youth compromise almost 40% of the homeless youth population in the city - and 80% of Ali Forney Center's clients are kicked out of their homes for being who they are. The remainder run away due to abuse, neglect, or a combination of rejection and abuse.
Imagine the feeling of not having a home, not having love or a safe place to stay JUST because of living your truth. If you've been through this in any capacity, I'm sorry - a couch doesn't count as a home either, but my door is always open & with a warm meal too. And if you've been lucky enough to not experience this feeling in any capacity, count your blessings!
If you have the means to donate, please consider it. If you were going to get me something for my birthday - donate to this cause instead! Anything and everything counts. I'll keep training to increase my deadlift PR (barbell pictured not to scale, but I'm gonna keep things quiet for now ;P), and working towards being an active member of the community.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, and see you on June 16th at the Murder of Crows Barbell Club!
