Today, many people are unaware and misinformed about the debilitating condition that is fibromyalgia. Incurable, fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that affects its sufferers in many different ways; most commonly sleep disturbances, memory alterations and widespread pain through the muscles and joints. Although it is rare for a person to be diagnosed with this condition in their younger years through their early adolescence, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia at the age of 17. This condition causes me severe pains in my muscles and joints, most commonly in my neck and shoulders. I have frequent migraines and disturbances in my sleep patterns. At times I also suffer from disturbances in my memory and cognition, a symptom known as fibro-fog. With pre-existing anxiety and depression, fibromyalgia sometimes exasperates symptoms associated with my comorbid disorders. I want to raise money, and more importantly, to raise awareness for this condition because nobody’s pain should ever go unnoticed. No one deserves to have their suffering go overlooked and be disregarded because it is not a visible ailment. Fibromyalgia pain is real and I am fighting for it to be recognized.
