Dear Friends and Family, I feel very fortunate to be the mother of two beautiful little people, Hayley and Finley. Both of our children needed care in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Units) in Calgary. Hayley was born 2 months earlier than expected and made her arrival on September 12, 2012, weighing a teeny 2lbs 9 oz. Without the expert medical care we received from both the Foothills and Rocky View Neonatal Intensive Care Units, we wouldn't have such a remarkable little girl in our lives. Then our Finley arrived a little early, only 8 days, but he had some difficulty breathing on his own at first, and then shortly after we were in the postpartum unit, he had difficulty regulating his blood sugar (which can cause brain damage) and had to be transferred to the NICU to get an IV and a sugar drip. He was in the Foothills NICU for 4 days and then the Peter Lougheed NICU for 1 night. Without the NICU, both our babies wouldn’t be here or be as happy and as healthy as they are. Once again, this Mother's Day, all I want to do is spend time with my family and raise money for the Neonatal Intensive Care Units in Calgary by participating in the SportChek Mother's Day Run and Walk (this year there was a choice to raise funds for the Calgary Health Trust - NICU, or Jumpstart through Canadian Tire and although I love both organizations, I owe so much to the NICU and we are choosing to support the Calgary Health Trust).
I realize that we all get bombarded with people asking for money for various charities and I completely understand if you already have a charity that is closer to your heart that you support. But I also figured there is never any harm in asking. So if you are able to support this cause, please sponsor Hayley, Finley, Ian and I this Mother's Day in an event that provides valuable funds for the NICUs. We will always be so indebted to these facilities and we hope to participate annually in this event. It's a charity event that is near and dear to our hearts because without the NICU, Hayley wouldn't be here today, Finley might not be the happy and healthy little cutie he is and if we can help fund these units in any way and possibly help another newborn survive, then it's worth the effort to us.
With lots of love, Raylene, Ian, Hayley and Finley
