This Cafe Gives Lonely and Recovering Individuals a Place Where They Belong
When you see stats like 1 in 7 Americans suffer from a substance use disorder, it's not a stretch to say addiction is killing our country. More people are dying today of drug overdoses than those who died of AIDS during the epidemic of the 1980s. Treatment is available but admitting there's a problem in the first place is the most difficult step. Because it becomes a very lonely world for an addict. You can't hang out with your old friends. Your family treats you differently. When you carry around the label of an addict, no one trusts you. This loneliness is a major cause of relapse. There's a void between admitting there's a problem and what happens after that.
Recovery Cafe fills the loneliness gap of addicts in treatment by providing a place where new connections are built around warm food, hot coffee, and smiling faces. The organization creates the place where recovering individuals can find deep belonging. In other words, the Recovery Café is an alternative, therapeutic, supportive community where people learn to love themselves again by receiving love from other people. Instead of a reactive environment for when crisis strikes, the person-centered system of care fosters a stable environment for recovery.
The accountability built into the community model designed by Recovery Cafe works amazingly well. So well, that other cities started setting up their own Recovery Cafes three years ago, spawning the Recovery Café Network. Today, 20 Cafés across the country are serving 2,000 people every month.
