303,000 women die every year as a result of complications during pregnancy and childbirth. That's one woman every two minutes. For each of these deaths, an average of four orphans are left behind. More shocking, 98% of these deaths are preventable. In the United States alone, we lose two women every day due to complications during pregnancy and childbirth, which means the U.S. ranks 46th worldwide in terms of maternal healthcare. WE HAVE THE WORST RATE OF MATERNAL DEATHS IN THE DEVELOPED WORLD. The number of women who lose their lives giving birth in America has nearly doubled over the last 25 years.
Help me in making a difference. In 2018 I will run 9 races in a year-long fundraising effort in support of Every Mother Counts. EMC is a non-profit organization dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother, everywhere. They educate the public about maternal health, engage individuals to advocate for the well-being of mothers, and invest in community-led programs around the world to improve access to essential maternity care.
I support EMC because it is a cause universal to everyone. We all have a mother, and lot of us are lucky to still have our mother. And as a mother of two, I understand the importance and security in being able to access essential maternity care. After suffering complications in both deliveries, I know I was a lucky one. I gave birth in the hands of capable midwives and doctors, others are not as fortunate. While we may take motherhood and childbirth for granted, it is a privilege to have such access to a safe delivery that is required for a healthy, lasting mother-child experience.
I'm asking for your support, whether that's one lump sum or a little with each race completed. 62 total miles seems like a far way to run, but many women have difficulty traveling much farther distances in order to reach the proper resources and ensure a safe delivery. Each donation goes directly to reducing the barriers, such as transportation, education, and supplies, that many women face daily when hoping to become mothers. We can do better. Every mother counts.
