Our dear friend Janet Laing was diagnosed with endometrial and ovarian cancer earlier this year. She underwent a hysterectomy and is now going through chemo. Janet didn't have any real evident signs that she had cancer and it came as quite a shock to her and her friends and family. Early cancers of the ovaries often cause no symptoms. When ovarian cancer causes symptoms, they tend to be symptoms that are more commonly caused by other things so only about 20% of ovarian cancers are found at an early stage. The fact that they found Janet's cancer so early is a miracle! We are hoping that with treatment the cancer can be eliminated completely. Her strength and courage has been remarkable through the process of being diagnosed, losing her hair, and feeling the physical limitations of a chemo treatment. Janet's witty sense of humor and positive outlook seem to help her get through this along with support from many adoring family members, friends and coworkers. Janet has been an addictions counselor and clinical supervisor at Ottagan Addictions Recovery (OAR) for many years. She has devoted her life to helping others struggling with a disease much like hers. She has devoted her time and energy to being a coach for Girls on the Run by helping young girls build the confidence and strength to reach their full potential. Janet is a devoted wife and the love she shows to her friends and family is evident in every aspect of her life. Janet is a an avid runner and has done countless races and half marathons. Her love for running is what inspired us to run the half marathon and to honor her by helping raise money to overcome this terrible disease. When Janet called to tell me about her diagnosis of cancer, she wondered if she would be able to run this summer. She wasn't sure how her body would respond to the chemo treatment. I could sense the disappointment in her voice when she talked about not being able to run the park to park half marathon. Then she said, "Well you should run it for me!" So that's what we are doing! We are running this race for you Janet and for all the people you have inspired in your life and those to come. Please consider donating or walking/running the race along with us. There is the half marathon race and a 5K race on September 23rd. http://www.hpark2parkrace.com/ All donations will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Thank you all for joining us in this fight!
