Safe Families: Serving families in crisis through the lost art of hospitality
Every year, hundreds of thousands of children in the US are abandoned—left without parents or "next of kin"—from circumstances like health emergencies, addiction, economic struggles, and even death. The families that get torn apart are often rendered exposed, vulnerable to trauma, likely involving abuse or neglect. A staggering 2.5 million kids in America are homeless every year. One deputy director at the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) described the problem like this: "Children are not valuable in our society unless they're your own or you adopt them. In America, people only look after what they own (their own)." This leaves out thousands of innocent children from finding hope again.
Safe Families helps families in crisis and children at risk of neglect find safety and space to regain a solid footing, return to a stable environment, and eventually reunify. By intervening before kids are shuffled off to foster care, Safe Families provides Host Families — safe, loving, and nurturing families who receive at-risk children with open arms. This allows parents the space to address their crises. Host Families are screened, undergo background checks, and receive coaching and support from Safe Families. The friendships that these host families provide restore an overwhelmed parent’s sense of self-worth and dignity. And they restore something for host families too: a sense of humanity and connection. Parents of these children receive tremendous support like resume, budgeting, and coping advice. The result is a strong support network that helps families in need find hope and security together once again.
Instead of giving up and giving in to isolation, thousands of broken families have been restored ignited with hope. Since 2003, Safe Families has arranged more than 35,000 hostings in the United States. The majority of children hosted are younger than five years of age, and 93 percent return to their parent or a relative who is in a better position to care for them. The true power of Safe Families comes from the local community in over 108 locations (i.e., "chapters") of 25,000+ volunteers and nearly 5,000 churches—joining hands to come alongside families in crisis.
