Safety Around Water is a 5-week drowning prevention program for local 3rd grade classes.
The YMCA provides this at no cost to participants as we find it critical and non-negotiable to teach kids how to stay safe around water, especially in our communities surrounded by water.
Through learning how to perform a sequenced set of skills over five lessons of 40 minutes each, the risk of drowning is greatly reduced, giving children confidence in and around water.
We pre- and post- test every child in 5 key areas based on the skills that have been proven to save lives. Here's the improvement we've seen:
Face in water: 43% >>> 94%
Tread water: 28% >>> 76%
Back float: 22% >>> 83%
Swim 10 ft.: 29% >>> 81%
Reach, throw, do not go: 33% >>> 100%
This program is possible because of the generosity of our community donors. Help us continue to provide these life-saving skills to local 3rd graders.
