Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection. In a nutshell, during SCAD, a sudden tear occurs within the layers of one or more arteries to the heart. This tear blocks blood follow and causes a heart attack. Unfortunately, SCAD may also lead to cardiac arrest and sometimes death. SCAD is the #1 cause of a heart attack in women under age 50 as well as the #1 cause of a heart attack in women who are pregnant and new mothers.We created several flyers about SCAD.

- Healthy with no known risk factors or underlying condition
- More than 90% occur in women than men – 10-15% of SCAD cases in women occur near the time of childbirth

Since SCAD is little known and poorly understood, education about SCAD is one of the first steps in fundraising. Mobilizing those impacted by SCAD and encouraging them to tell their stories is another necessary step toward accomplishing our mission
