Sea Wanderer is on a mission: remove plastic waste from our nation's coastline and prevent it from entering the marine environment through research, community outreach, and education.
Picture this: A beautiful loggerhead sea turtle was affectionately named Bubbles by a rescue team off the coast of Texas. She survived a boat strike, and after being given a second chance by the rescue team, she's finally ready to be released back to her home.
After her ceremonial crawl back to the ocean, she's so relieved and happy to be back home! But, before she can swim far enough to hit the open ocean, a coastal fisherman has tossed his old, useless fishing net overboard. Bubbles didn't see it in time to escape, and became entangled in the net! Unable to come up for air or catch any food, she passes away on the ocean floor, still entangled in the fishing net.
Unfortunately this is a true story for 100,000 marine animals each year.
Our Oceans are in serious trouble. Plastic pollution is constantly increasing, threatening our health, the survival of all marine animals and every marine ecosystem.
Plastics never disappear. Over time, they break into smaller and smaller pieces, which are then eaten by all marine life. Becuase plastics can't be digested, they accumulate in an animal's stomach. This allows plastics to be eaten up through the food chain to continue to accumulate, and ultimately cause starvation in our beloved whales...dolphins...sea turtles...seals...sharks...fish...shrimp...
Larger plastics that haven't broken down yet entangle all marine animals, causing serious injuries or death.
By 2050, researchers predict there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans.
But together, we can make sure this doesn't happen.
Sea Wanderer was established to significantly decrease the amount of plastic that's in our oceans by hosting beach cleanups nationwide. Even though we've only been around since May 2017, we have already removed 635 pounds of trash! With your donation, we hope to not only continue our beach cleanups, but to improve them by investing in watercraft to go offshore and pick up larger plastics too. We also want to start a research program to figure out what other effects plastics are having on our marine ecosystems.
Our organization also brings awareness to our communities through educational workshops for kids 8+, and beach camps for teens interested in marine conservation. Both provide fun, hands-on experiences for our future generations to learn how they can make a difference. With your donation, we can expand our workshops and beach camps to more communities nationwide, and provide supplies needed to create a more memorable experience for each child.
With each piece of plastic removed from the ocean, and with every educational opportunity, Sea Wanderer provides hope and a chance for survival for thousands of marine animals. We still have a long way to go, and there is still a lot of work to be done. With your donation, you will be joining a movement that is making a real, tangible, significant impact in the lives of thousands in your community and in the oceans. Please donate to help us continue and intensify our impact. Let's save our oceans and help our communities!
