For 24 years, Seacoast Outright has been devoted to supporting LGBTQ+ youth by providing a safe space and social-emotional support. We continue to build upon our success by expanding our youth programming and adding educational offerings for the community.
We hope that you have been able to take part in one of the many exciting events we have hosted this year. Whether you attended our third annual PRIDE (the biggest yet!), our Youth Open Mic event, or our first-ever Parents’ Night, chances are you felt the PRIDE we take in all of our efforts to build a safe and inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ youth.
Over the last year, attendance at our Friday night support meetings has continued to swell. In October of 2015, we were averaging five youth per week. Now, we see roughly 25 per week with many new attendees from all over New Hampshire, Northern Mass., and Southern Maine.
2017 also brought a surge in the number of parents, teachers, and counselors asking what they can do to reassure young people –bombarded with disheartening and divisive messages, even from our country’s own leadership – that they are loved and supported. To address this call for help, we will be officially launching our Educational Outreach program in early 2018 (stay tuned)! Grown out of the original Outright Speakers’ Bureau (active from 1995-2005), this program will offer comprehensive inclusivity education, resources, and training to schools, churches, and agencies that work with youth. We are so excited to extend our reach deeper into the community in this way.
Our primary goal, as a support and advocacy organization, is to improve the social climate for LGBTQ+ youth. THIS IS WHAT WE DO. We provide a welcoming space with trained adult facilitators, giving youth a safe and affirming place to be themselves. We go out into the community to teach and open minds. We establish partnerships to make LGBTQ+ issues part of everyday discourse. And we make sure our youth have plenty of opportunities to celebrate who they are!
They rely on us—and we rely on you. Please join us as a beacon of love, light, and assurance right now. We depend heavily on the generosity of individuals and businesses. Without the assistance of community-minded people like you, we would not be able to serve these youth year after year.
“Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” –President Barack Obama
