This year, I'm raising money for Second Wind Fund of Boulder County ("SWFBC"). As you may know, suicide prevention is a cause that is important to me. I have had the opportunity to volunteer for Second Wind Fund of BC at various events in the past. SWFBC is local 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides counseling to youth at risk for suicide who could not otherside afford mental health therapy (they are underinsured and/or cannot afford co-pays or payments under their deductible ).
Basically, a student is identified by their school as at-risk for suicide. SWFBC works quickly; a school counselor calls SWFBC and it's a five- minute conversation. The paperwork is streamlined so that a youth sees a therapist right away, sometimes the same day. SWFBC foots the bill; with the therapists providing their services at a reduced rate.
Sadly, suicide continues to be the 2nd leading cause of death among teens in Colorado. Overall, Colorado has the seventh highest rate of suicide deaths in the nation. The Colorado Trust estimates that about 25% of Colorado teens have serious thoughts of suicide in any given year. Suicide is a tragedy that cuts across all socio-economic classes and disproportionately affects the gay, lesbian, and bisexual teen community (with a recent report showing that 48.5% of teens in those communities have considered suicide compared with the CO state average of 14.5%). Even when a teen's suicide risk is recognized, the Colorado Trust estimates that as many as 62% of youth struggling with suicidal thoughts do not seek treatment due to lack of financial resources.
Since April of 2009, SWFBC has been able to provide direct counseling services to over 210 youth in the community that do not have the financial resources for treatment dealing with possible suicide.
Thank you for supporting this worthy cause, Max
