I am extremely excited to be teaming up with Self Help Africa as I run my first ever NYC marathon. Knowing that I'm running for an important cause is extremely exciting and certainly will help push me to the finish line BUT I need your help!
Self Help Africa is dedicated to ending hunger and poverty in rural Africa. 250 million people in Africa, farmers and their families, suffer hunger and malnutrition, struggling in extreme rural poverty without enough food; left behind by rising economic growth.
Self Help Africa is a leading international development charity with an expertise in small-scale farming and growing family-farm businesses. We are motivated by injustice, by our expertise in small-scale agriculture and family-farm business, and the opportunity we have to help small farmers change the lives of their families.
One part that stuck me was learning that Women produce up to 70% of the food grown on small farms in Africa.
More than half of farmers in sub-Saharan Africa are women. In spite of this, African Women receive just a fraction of the support available to men. As a result, their farms can be 20-40% less productive. Being a woman myself, I've seen the continued battle women face to receive equal opportunity. These women are strong, smart, creative, hard working, and resilient. When the going gets tough, the tough get going! For them, I WANT TO RUN!
To learn more about the charity I encourage you to go to the website: https://selfhelpafrica.org/us/. I hope you will find it in your heart to donate to this wonderful cause and help support me as I challenge myself to my first full marathon on Nov. 4th, 2018. Let's blow this fundraiser out of the water!
