Overexploitation, through targeted as well as incidental catch, is one of the main global threats facing shark survival. Over-fishing is driving sharks to the brink of extinction - with many populations down by 80 percent. Tens of millions are killed each year for their meat, fins, liver, and other products, as many fisheries are unregulated and catch are significantly under-reported. By-catch – catching sharks incidentally and indiscriminately while fishing for other commercial species – poses a significant threat to sharks. At the same time, new markets for shark and ray products are blurring the line between targeted and accidental catches. Finning – the removal of shark fins and discard of the shark’s body at sea - is often associated with shark over-fishing, as keeping only the fins aboard the vessel allows fishermen to kill many more sharks than if they were required to bring back the entire animal. Fueling this practice is the fact that shark fins yield a much higher price than shark meat, providing an economic incentive for the wasteful and indefensible practice of finning. The annual volume for fin imports decreased 5% (from 17,682 tonnes (t) in 2000 to 16,815 t in 2011). This is good news and SharkFinShirts.com was conceived to continue to decrease this number. However, the annual volume for shark meat (including skate and rays) imports increased by 42% (from was 85,710 t in 2000 to 121,641 t in 2011). This is why we are pairing with Project AWARE, so that we can address the whole issue. The money raised is to save the whole shark, not just the fins.
My name is Michael O'Hearne. I appreciate you taking the time to read over this campaign and hope that this page, started on 2/22/18, inflamed your desire to learn more. Awareness of this issue is the first step. For more information on the current situation of the sharks and rays, and a list of the global legislation, agreements, and conventions that we advocate visit: projectaware.org/sharks.
Shark Fin Shirts is a Non-Profit. Logical Question: where does the profit go? Paired with Project AWARE (a global movement for ocean protection powered by a community of adventurers), all profits from sticker purchases and t-shirt purchases go to conservation and awareness efforts to stop shark-finning. All backer donations above the price of a t-shirt will be devoted, in their entirety, to Project AWARE's various initiatives. All of the following are offered as additional incentives to assist in the fundraising movements of Shark Fin Shirts; photo album access, exclusive music video preview, giant inflatable whales, and Michael's first guitar.
Over the past two years managing and performing with the band Shark Fin Soup, I learned a great deal about the dangers and effects of shark fin soup on the endangered population of sharks in the world’s oceans. At the last Shark Fin Soup concert (Feb. 17th, Fox Theatre) I announced the farewell of two band members. Propelled by the positive support of the local community and motivated by the other band members career goals and developments, I began initial thoughts of Shark Fin Shirts: An Anti-Finning Campaign. Shark Fin Shirts is my effort to continue with the momentum created by the band and to make a change.
