Back in January when I entered into the lottery to run, I decided that if chosen, I was going to use the opportunity to spread awareness of Ataxia. You may be asking,”What is Ataxia?” We’ll that’s a great question given that many know very little about this disease. Ataxia is a degenerative disease of the nervous system. Symptoms of Ataxia include impaired speech, gait imbalance, incoordination of limbs, just to name a few. All are related to degeneration of the part of the brain, called the cerebellum, that is responsible for coordinating movement. Ataxia is a disease that affects people of all ages. Complications from the disease are serious, oftentimes debilitating, and can be life-shortening.
Despite the challenges that Bryan faces daily, nothing seems to bring him down. All who know him love him with his giggly laugh and comic personality. He inspires me daily with his positive attitude and love of life. Although Ataxia has become part of our life, it doesn't stop our family and we continue to live and love the life we have created together. With your love and support, I look forward to supporting The National Ataxia Foundation on November 4th!
