What Is Shred For Red?
Shred for Red is a one-day skiing event benefitting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and is open to all ages and skiing abilities. This event will help spread awareness and raise funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to support their mission of eradicating blood cancer.
Once registered, participants will receive their own individual fundraising page where they can begin collecting donations. The top 8 teams and top 10 individuals (+ guest) who raise the most money (above their fundraising minimum) by midnight on December 4th will be invited to our exclusive VIP reception at the St. Regis on December 7th. We will announce at the VIP reception which teams and individuals will have the unique opportunity to ski with an Olympian during Shred for Red!
Skiers participating in Shred for Red on December 8th will compete in fun and family friendly challenges and activities as they enjoy the world class slopes of last year’s #1 North American Ski Resort as voted by the readers of SKI magazine, Deer Valley Resort. After an awesome day of skiing, participants will get to relax at our Après-ski celebration; enjoy food and drink while mingling with fellow skiers and taking photos with Olympians.
Is this a race?
Sort of, but speed has little to do with this super fun event. Shred for Red is a combination of an awesome day of skiing, fun activities and challenges where teams seek out and complete tasks in order to earn points. Teams with the most points at the end of the day will receive special recognition at the Après-ski reception. Hint: if you want to come in first, be a top fundraiser and you’ll get a leg up on the competition!
How do I get invited to the VIP dinner?
The Shred for Red VIP reception is reserved for the top teams and individuals who have raised more than the minimum amount required to participate (see below for more on fundraising minimum). This exclusive reception will take place on December 7th at the beautiful St. Regis Deer Valley at 6:00p.m., the night before Shred for Red. Attendees will have the opportunity to wine, dine and rub shoulders with world renowned athletes as we celebrate the amazing teams and individual fundraisers who came out on top and the impact they have on finding a cure for blood cancers. Top Fundraising Teams and Individuals will be based on the amount raised by midnight on December 4th, although you can continue fundraising for Shred the Red until the end of the year. Teams and individuals who are eligible to attend the VIP reception will be contacted the morning of December 5th.
What can I expect the day of the event?
Expect to have a blast! We don’t want to give away all the fun, but upon receiving your participant bib at registration (located at Snow Park Lodge), you will also receive a list of challenges and activities to complete on the mountain. These challenges are designed to be fun and maybe just a little tricky.
The challenges vary from something as easy as checking in at X point to getting timed on the NASTAR race course! Top fundraising teams and individuals will have the privilege of completing their tasks with the help of an Olympian! Be sure to take a picture of each challenge and then post it to Instagram and # ShredForRed so we can tally your points. You know what they say- if it’s not on social media, did it even happen?
After you’ve skied your heart out, join us in the Snow Park Lodge for our Après ski reception where we’ll announce our challenge winners. You’ll also enjoy drinks, munchies and have the chance to take photos and hang with our Olympic athletes. Maybe if you ask nicely, they’ll sign your Shred for Red bib!
How do I get an Olympian on my team?
Be one of the top fundraising teams or top individual fundraising participants and you will get to spend the day with the likes of Nordic Combined two-time Olympian Bryan Fletcher, two-time medalist Shannon Happe or one of our other nine amazing Olympians joining us! We will announce which teams and individuals have earned this amazing opportunity at our exclusive Shred for Red VIP reception on December 7th at St Regis Deer Valley. How do you get invited to the reception? Be one of our top fundraisers! Top Fundraising Teams and Individuals will be based on the amount raised by midnight on December 4th, although you can continue fundraising for Shred the Red until the end of the year. Teams and individuals who are eligible to attend the VIP reception will be contacted the morning of December 5th and sent an invitation.
Why do I want an Olympian on my team?
Besides the fact that they are amazing people with incredible skills, some of the Shred for Red challenges require the help of an Olympian and if one isn’t on your team it will be mighty hard to complete those particular challenges.
Is the fundraising minimum per person or per team?
The fundraising minimum of $200 is per adult (13 and older) and $100 per youth 12 and under (regardless if you’re skiing as an individual or part of a team) and includes an all-day ski pass at Deer Valley Resort, etc. (want to know what else is included? Check out our answer to “How Do I Register” for more details). Please note that youth 16 and younger MUST participate with a registered adult.
What if I don't reach the fundraising minimum?
In order to participate in Shred for Red, all participants must reach their fundraising minimum ($200 for adults 13 and older, $100 for youth 12 and under) by the event day, December 8th, 2018. Participants will have the opportunity at check-in on December 8th to make a personal donation to reach their minimum.
How many people can be on a team?
You can have up to 8 people on your team. Have more than 8? No problem! Just start another team. Don't forget - you must have the majority of your team (showing off their Shred for Red bibs) in each challenge picture to receive full points.
