SPACE on Ryder Farm is a non profit residency program for artists and activists housed on a 222 year old working organic farm in Brewster, New York. SPACE creates an environment singular in its ability to invigorate artists and innovators and their work, and contributes to the sustainability and resourceful preservation of one of the oldest family-run organic farms on the East Coast.
-We fully subsidized all individual and small group residencies in 2017, ensuring that no one is prevented from the opportunities at SPACE because of their financial capacity.
-We granted 50% of our residency slots in 2017 to people of color and underrepresented voices. We believe that in all endeavors--artistic creation, social justice, democracy--what we create is stronger and more impactful when there are more and different perspectives at the table.
-We launched two new residency programs in 2017: a Film Lab for early and mid-career filmmakers, and a week-long Greenhouse Residency for early-career writers.
-We doubled the number of spaces for the Family Residency, offering more working parents and their children the time and space to create.
-Four SPACE-developed plays are slated to premiere Off Broadway this season
-We became the third Resident Company at Playwright’s Horizons.
In just seven seasons SPACE has:
-Hosted over 1,250 residents, among them Oscar, Tony and Obie Award winners, Pulitzer finalists, Guggenheim Fellows, and MacArthur Geniuses.
-Held symposia for advocates, lawyers, and activists working in social justice.
-Supported the development of numerous plays that have premiered off-Broadway and across the country.
-Nurtured over 60 young professionals through its intern program.
-Converted fallow spaces into productive space for artists, including rehabilitating 3 housing structures, building 2 stages and a dock.
In 2018 SPACE will:
-Expand the season. Later this month we’ll be announcing our first-ever Season Extension Residency for the month of February, increasing our season from 22 weeks to 26.
-Increase financial support for residents. We’re creating a travel fund for out-of-state residents, and committing to zeroing out application fees in the next two years.
-Continue growing our physical space. We’re in the midst of a strategic plan to improve and increase our facilities for residents and staff.
A community of inspired supporters, volunteers, friends and family have literally and figuratively made SPACE on Ryder Farm the singular place where artists and activists come together to do their most important work that, in turn, has a transformative impact on the culture of our time.
We are close to being able to achieve these goals and your support is vital. While this Crowdrise campaign is only a piece of our end-of-year fundraising efforts, it is a very important one. Please help us raise $15,000 to ensure that our season in 2018 can reach its full potential by making a tax-deductible contribution before December 31st.
Happy holidays from the SPACE team!
