The American Red Cross launched the Home Fire Campaign in 2014 to reduce deaths and injuries caused by homes fires. Part of this campaign is Sound the Alarm. Save a Life. where we visit neighborhoods across Western North Dakota to install FREE smoke alarms.
In the last year alone, more than 4,600 free smoke alarms were installed in homes across the Dakotas Region and more than 1,500 children were educated on home fire safety and preparedness. Nationwide, more than 258 lives have been saved through the Home Fire Campaign.
The Challenge: Home fires kill seven people every day in the U.S. More than 60% of fire-related deaths are in homes without working smoke alarms, and more than 5 million U.S. homes are without smoke alarms. Here in the Dakotas Region last year, nearly 20 lives were tragically lost to home fires, with 12 of those being children. THIS CANNOT HAPPEN.
The Solution: Together with volunteers, fire departments and local community partners, we are installing FREE smoke alarms, replacing dead alarm batteries, helping families create escape plans and teaching people about fire prevention. These events are being planned across Western North Dakota throughout the next year and with your support, can happen in a neighborhood near you. Sound the Alarm. Save a Life.
