In the United States, there are nearly 1 million people suffering from postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), more than multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis combined. Despite this, POTS has just a fraction of the research funding. The Standing Up to POTS Research Fund awards POTS related research grants up to $20,000 to leading autonomic physicians, favoring those that are related to improving quality of life for people with POTS now. Our first grant was awarded to Dr. Svetlana Blitshteyn in June, 2017 to study the relationship between Lyme disease and the development of POTS.
POTS is a chronic, invisible disorder that is often developed by women between the ages of 12 and 50, but it can strike anyone at any time. Many with POTS suffer debilitating fatigue, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, neuropathic pain, brain fog, abdominal pain, and headaches. The underlying problem that connects these symptoms is dysfunction of the autonomic (automatic part) nervous system. It is estimated that 1% of teenagers develop POTS.
Standing Up to POTS is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization whose mission is to help patients with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) live their best lives. We do this through RESEARCH to help improve quality of life for people with POTS, ADVOCACY to increase awareness in the general public and medical community, and SUPPORT of families currently struggling with POTS.
Every dollar raised in this campaign will be spent on research to improve the quality of life for people with POTS. Our work is done exclusively by volunteers, so we have almost no overhead. Your donation will go directly toward research that seeks to improve the quality of life for people with POTS now. Please join us in Standing Up to POTS!
