This semester a group of 55 Virginia Tech students are participating in a study abroad program called International Business in Lugano: Combining Theory and Practice. For the first three months we take marketing classes in Lugano, Switzerland; at the end of March, 12 of us will have the opportunity to travel to Ethiopia. We will be teaching primary school children English and computer skills. Each semester, the students travelling to Africa work on a different service project. This semester, we have the opportunity to work with Bruh Tesfa.
Located in Adrigrat, Ethiopia, Bruh Tesfa is a youth and social center that works to “build a better future for Adrigrat’s youth.” They are fueled by the belief that education will empower the most disadvantaged members of society. In addition to workshops and recreation, the community center also provides a hostel program for disadvantaged students who show great academic potential. With no secondary schools in Adigrat’s remote surrounding villages, students often have to walk up to 3 hours to get to school. The hostel program provides 27 students with a home, food, and resources to be successful in their final year of secondary school. With Bruh Tesfa’s support, almost all students continue on to university. Bruh Tesfa’s goal is to continuously support their students to ensure that no student can use poverty or circumstance as an excuse to keep them from starting their higher education journey.
On Wednesday, March 28, we will be participating in our fundraiser, Steps for School, to raise money for Bruh Tesfa’s hostel program. For every $1 donated, we will walk 1 minute. If we reach $180 or 180 minutes, we will walk all the way to Italy! Our 3 hour walk is the same amount of time students would walk from their homes to school without the assistance of Bruh Tesfa’s hostel program. Help us walk 3 hours so the students in the hostel program don’t have to!
We’ve set a team fundraising goal of $5,000, which will be able to financially support 5 students for an entire year.
A $40 donation = scholastic materials for 1 student for 1 academic semester
An $80 donation = scholastic materials for 1 student for 1 academic year
A $125 donation = scholastic material, clothes, and transport for 1 student in their first semester of university
A $175 donation = hygiene materials, clothes, sportswear, etc. for 1 student for 1 academic semester
A $210 donation = food for 1 student for 1 academic semester
A $250 donation = scholastic material, clothes, and transport for 1 student in their first year of university
Any contribution is greatly appreciated!
