Hello friends, my name is Rebecca Opetsi, I was born with a physical disability known as spina bifida (defect of the spinal cord), this resulted to paralysis of my body and later on amputation of my left foot. Growing up in Nairobi Kenya, I faced stigma, discrimination and confusion as a result of this disability, for instance I was denied enrollment in schools as teachers thought my disability was contagious. I stayed in isolation throughout my childhood. On a day to day basis I face barriers first as a woman and secondly as a person with disability. This has not stopped me though: I've been working in my community to advocate for inclusion and rights of people with disabilities through disabled persons organizations in East Africa. Details of my work can be found at opetsi.blospot.com
Last month I received admission to the New York University to study masters in public and non profit management and policy program in the fall of 2018, I am hopeful that the skills and knowledge that I will gain will help me in making our community inclusive for people with disabilities. I am however, not in a position of funding my studies and I am seeking your support in making this dream a reality.
