We put up a small tent to start a school with ten children; 200 parents showed up with their kids for admission. Things moved quickly from that point and now, after seven years, we are empowering more than 500 students.
Maya Universe Academy is Nepal's first free private school. Parents contribute their time and labor by working in the school's fields for two days a month. Thus utilizing our greatest resources in this remote and disadvantaged farming village in Nepal - the families generation's worth of agricultural knowledge.
We are expanding to reach out to more youth in the village. However, we are faced with limited resources and lack of trained teachers. Carrying on our spirit of social entrepreneurship, we are tackling this obstacle by extending Maya Community Chickens, a project that utilizes families' knowledge in poultry to sell chickens in the cities. However, this expansion will take time to provide sustainable income for the school; preventing us from addressing our current problem.
This is why we are raising $6000 to fund a Math teacher's salary for next two years ($250*24 month). Having an extra teacher will ease the workload of our current teachers and increase our capacity to address the individual needs of our students. The teacher will also allow us to expand and ensure that we meet the current demand for education at our village. This is essential because two years of delayed education can have a lasting impact on a child's future. After these first two years, Maya Community Chicken will be big enough to finance this salary.
As soon as we reach the amount we will advertise the position in all the local newspapers. Any amount you donate is tax deductible through the Edward Charles Foundation and can make a substantial impact in a child's future.
