WILL YOU HELP?
5 out of every 10 kids owns a skateboard, it’s the fastest growing sport in America and even becomes an Olympic sport in 2020! Skateboarding promotes physical fitness, engages youth in positive activity and is affordable.
Skateboarding is here to stay – but kids and adults in Des Moines and Central Iowa do not have a world-class skatepark in which to enjoy and practice their sport.
After extensive surveys of churches, community centers, parents, and economic development leaders, it was determined one of the top unmet needs in our community is a high-quality, dedicated park for skating.
Plans are underway to change that by creating a 65,000 square foot regional skatepark on the north end of the Principal Riverwalk in downtown Des Moines. The city has donated 2 acres of beautiful land and California Skateparks has created an exciting design – one that will lend itself to new skaters as well as experienced, highly-skilled skaters.
When completed the Des Moines Regional Skatepark will be one of the largest in the United States and it will have the capacity to host demonstrations and competitions – maybe even Olympic trials!
The skatepark will include a two-tiered, 300 foot downhill snake-run; bowls and pools with depths of 3 to 9 feet; a lower plaza with a pedestrian walkway and shaded bench seating adjacent to the river.
A group of community leaders has formed to raise the $3.5 million needed to create this great amenity for Des Moines and beyond – and we need your help! The committee’s goal is to receive donations from more than 1,000 grassroots contributors. Donations of all sizes are needed and appreciated and will help us reach our goal. Please click “Donate Now”!
