This is my second year participating in BvB Dallas and I'm determined to tackle Alzheimer's with Team Brunette!
First, thank you for taking a moment to read my page about why I'm participating. Alzheimer's disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States and does not have a known cure. I, and the team, play football as a fun way to raise money to help increase awareness, research for preventative care and to one day find the cure.
Alzheimer's disease has hit my family hard. My grandpa, Isaias, was the first person in my family to experience symptoms and got progressively worse as the years went by to the point where he was unable to speak. He passed away due to the severity of his disease. I remember my grandma doing everything she possibly could to take care of him and showed me what true compassion and care embodied.
Now, my aunt Celia has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Watching another member of my family struggle to remember is something I don't wish on anyone.
Last year I joined BvB Dallas as a way to honor my family. I had NEVER played football and it was an absolute challenge (that resulted in broken finger in the process) to work hard for a good cause.
Being a part of the BvB Dallas organization is a way for me to contribute to increased awareness about Alzheimer's disease and raise money for research and care for those, like my family, battling this disease.
This year, our beneficiaries include the Alzheimer's Association, the Senior Source, the Center for Brain Health and UT Southwestern Medical Center. Every dollar we raise goes to these four organizations to help them continue Alzheimer's research and care.
As an organization, our goal this summer is to raise $700,000! We practice for hours every Sunday, fundraise our hearts out and then we, Team Brunette, battle it out on August 11 at the Cottonbowl against the Team Blonde.
I will take the field on August 11 in honor of my grandpa and aunt this season.
