In 2014, I was diagnosed with a rare cancer called GIST (Gastro-intestinal Stromal Tumors). It took 2 years for my doctors to diagnose this disease and I was told it was inoperable. My oncologist told be that there was a drug that has worked on some patients and he wanted me to try it. The drug is called Gleevec and I take this drug daily and I was fortunate enough to have positive results. In 2015, The Life Raft Group told be about a specialist in Miami that they work with and his team have treated me for this disease. I had surgery to remove several tumors and I am currently stable. I must take the chemo medicine for the rest of my life in order to prevent the growth of new tumors.
In July, 2018, Adrienne and I will be participating in a Walk-A-Thon to raise funds for The Life Raft Group that is dedicated to helping GIST patients through education and research. It would be greatly appreciated if you can support this non-profit organization to find a cure for this rare cancer.
