I've written about how dental health care is so seemingly mundane to many of us, but is, in fact, a luxury to more children & families than one would think. Dental caries is the most common childhood disease in America. Also among the most common illnesses in the US, according to the CDC, are mental illnesses. CDC statistics state 1 in 5 Americans experience some form of mental illness, occasional or chronic, in any given year. This past month (May), one focus of Mental Health Awareness Month was de-stigmatizing mental health issues. Facilitating access to quality mental health care is a critical, potentially lifesaving next step. South Bay Children's Health Center, a small local non-profit, addresses these most common illnesses by providing both dental & mental health services to low income children & families in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County.
The Champions for Children 5K Trail Run/Walk on June 23 is SBCHC's annual major fundraiser. Someone asked me why I spend "so much time" volunteering to help with C4C. "What do you get from it?" That's not the point. I do it because I can.
