In 1994, Dr. Elizabeth Jones helped open the Hospital Infantil de las Californias, a non-profit hospital. It was a modest 2,000 square-foot facility located one half-mile across the Mexico-U.S. border with only one employee. Nearly 15 years after receiving the World of Children Health Award in 2003, Hospital Infantil de las Californias is now a 56,000 square foot, full-service pediatric specialty center, proudly providing over 25 specialty services, provided by 160 doctors, nurses and employees—nearly half of whom are volunteers, including Dr. Jones. Aside from the specialized care, medical, education and research programs, the hospital has also developed an international exchange of medical technology, as well as growth opportunities for professionals, students, families, and the community in general.
The hospital sees approximately 40,000 children each year—most with little to no medical or surgical coverage. Children with serious illnesses, issues such as eye problems, dental conditions and even ancillary conditions, such as malnutrition, speech therapy and physical therapy, are treated. The staff recognizes the potential for children with physical deformations or conditions to become productive member of society is limited. The medical staff is determined to change that. No child is turned away for their family’s inability to pay.
Every day, patients arrive at Hospital Infantil de las Californias' Mellor Center for Rehabilitation desperately seeking physical therapy and rehabilitation services. In January of 2018 alone, the department saw 394 physical therapy sessions and 82 rehabilitation sessions. Most of the families seeking this care, including many single parents, can’t afford full, or even partial payment, for their child’s treatment.
Your support will provide free physical therapy for children, and follow-up home care instruction for their parents, who would otherwise not be able to afford this kind of life-changing medical care.
