In 2017, I submitted an application to run the Falmouth Road Race on behalf of Team IMPACT because of my son. He was drafted by Team IMPACT onto the Brandeis University Men's Soccer Team in Fall 2016, just before some of the toughest months of his life. Because of the relationships he made with the athletes and coaches on that soccer team, you may not have even known that his medical struggles even existed. Soccer practices and games helped give Austin something positive to look forward to, and something positive to focus on while his medical team scrambled for ways to help him. When he was admitted to the hospital, those athletes and coaches came in to visit and sent daily messages of encouragement. My gratitude for these coaches and players sent me reeling for ways to give back, and I was determined to make a small but positive impact of my own.
I'm happy to report that I successfully completed my first Falmouth Road Race within the timing limites I had set for myself. Despite my best efforts, I still had a burning inside of me, and I knew that my mission to support Team IMPACT wouldn't stop there. I will be running my second Falmouth Road Race on behalf of Team IMPACT this August, and I couldn't be prouder to continue to give back to this wonderful organization.

Team IMPACT is a national nonprofit connecting kids with serious and chronic illnesses to local college athletic teams, forming life-long bonds and life-changing outcomes. Since its inception in May 2011, Team IMPACT has matched over 1,500 children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses onto collegiate athletic teams at 500+ schools in 48 states. These children are drafted onto local teams and are given the social and psychological boost they need to get through their treatments and beyond, while giving the student-athletes perspective and teaching them lessons in courage and grit that cannot be taught in the classroom or on the field.
On August 19, 2018, the Team IMPACT GoTeam will take on the 7-mile Falmouth Road Race course to raise funds to expand the efforts to match more children with collegiate athletic teams across the country.
