Our Story: “Your daughter is profoundly deaf.” Those simple words would set us off on an amazing journey. I’m not sure where we would be today without the caring support we received over the years from the dedicated professionals at hear ME now.
When Sarah was diagnosed over 20 years ago, we had very little choice in Maine. We could teach her sign language, or drive 2 ½ hours to the closest Auditory Verbal Therapist in Massachusetts who would help us teach her to listen and speak. We knew right away that we wanted Sarah to be able to communicate without the need for an interpreter; we wanted her to communicate using spoken English. So, we drove to Massachusetts once a week for 5 years to get her the therapy that was not available in Maine at the time.
She started Kindergarten, fully mainstreamed in her local public school. Thankfully, by that time, hear ME now opened and was able to provide support to the school so they could help Sarah better access the information in the classroom. One of the most important things hear ME now has provided over the years is their focus on assisting Sarah to communicate using only spoken language. They truly believed that, despite her profound hearing loss, she is capable of communicating in a hearing world like the rest of us, because that is what they specialize in.
Today Sarah is in her junior year of at Plymouth State University and we have come full circle in seeing the benefits of hear ME now! Sarah’s academic success is a testament to what can be accomplished when children and their families are given options at a young age and have the professionals available to support their choice.
Please join us in our commitment to hear ME now so that all Maine families have the ability to choose listening and spoken language for their deaf or hard-of-hearing children and can have access to professionals with the training, certification and experience hear ME now provides.
