Children believe in heroes. Be one too by donating to Dr. Ezer's campaign.
Dr. Ustun Ezer is increasing the survival rate of children with leukemia by pioneering an innovative medical, financial, and educational support system in Turkey. That is why Dr. Ezer is the recipient of World of Children's 2017 Health Award.
Dr. Ezer was faced with a dilemma that would spark a world-changing idea. He had a four-year-old patient who had been diagnosed with leukemia; however, despite the seriousness of the illness and urgency of treatment, the young boy and his grandfather weren’t showing up for their appointments.
Confounded, Dr. Ezer went to the young boy’s village to search for him. He eventually found the boy’s grandfather, who told Dr. Ezer that the four-day treatment at the hospital would mean losing 12 Liras ($3), or four full days of income, just enough to support his family. Dr. Ezer promised to give him 15 Liras ($3.75) every time he brought his grandson to the hospital for treatment.
For the next three years, the young boy came in for treatment and was cured. Realizing that the young boy’s situation was a common problem, Dr. Ezer founded LOSEV to provide children with leukemia and chronic blood disorders access to free, life-saving treatment and a strong, holistic support system. LOSEV has a hotel based at the hospital where patients’ families and visitors can stay; a village for patients who do not need to stay in the hospital but still need to receive treatment; an elementary and secondary school; and a vocational center for parents and families.
The results have been striking. Before LOSEV was founded, only 22% of children with leukemia survived. Now, about 92% of children survive.
