Hi! I’m running the Boston Marathon in honor of my brother, Jon, and my niece and nephews who teach me every day about the joy of life amidst moments of pain and grief.
Jon was diagnosed with ocular melanoma in 1999 when he was 31. OM is rare, especially in someone so young, but it’s the most common cancer of the eye. Jon was initially diagnosed and treated at Mass Eye and Ear. His treatment included enucleation of his eye and one year of self-administered shots of interferon.
Jon was lucky to go on to meet and marry Suzanne and they had 3 children, Charlie, Mia and Nathaniel. He enjoyed a successful career as a lawyer, becoming a partner in a Boston firm and then in-house counsel at Brookstone. He was insanely smart, with a dry wit , and he fiercely loved his family and friends.
In August 2009, when the kids were 2 and under, Jon’s cancer had metastisized to his spine, liver and lungs. During the next 8 months, Jon underwent both traditional and experimental treatments, but none were successful and he passed away in April 2010. These final days of his life were full of fear, sadness, hope, anger, frustration and love, along with an attempt to try to understand how so many families could be enduring a similar experience with their loved ones also being diagnosed with cancer.
I’m running to raise money that will go towards helping to treat and cure others with a similar diagnosis to Jon’s. Thank you to Mass Eye and Ear for giving me this opportunity and thanks to everyone for your support, love and any financial donation that you can make. xo
