The Friends Program of Kearney is a mentoring program for elementary childern. It has been in operation within Kearney Public Schools since 1978. Our mission is to promote personal development of youth through positive one-on-one role modeling. The Friends Program supports the power of volunteerism through friendships between adults and elementary school age children. The program provides the opportunity for Big Friends to develop leasdership and communication skills, and for the Little Friends to experience and develop healthy relationships.
Since 1978 the organization has served over 3,000 elementary students in the Kearney Public Schools and has engaged 3,300 high school and college students; and other community adults, in a positive service activity.
For many hard-working families, the basic ingredients for a good like are increasingly beyond reach. Almost one in four working parents doesn't earn enough to provide for their families. An alarming 25% of teenagers will not graduate on time, imperiling their chances to make a successful transition to adulthood. The Friends Program has helped many children to see their potential to stay in school and realize they can make a difference in their life.
