We are Whaler Nation! We are a youth/Junior Hockey organization based out of Chesapeake Virginia. We are here to spread awareness and raise as much money as we can for esophageal cancer. Last year we sadly lost one of alumni to this awful disease. Gerald "Jerry" Owen was the genuine article. He always had a smile on his face and was always ready to take on life! Jerry started playing hockey at the young age of 5. Even as youngster you could see that he had so much talent! He was so good that he would usually play up with older kids, just so he could get a challenge and work on his game. This continued until Whaler Nation finally introduced a junior program in the summer of 2006. He was so good that he made the Inaugural team at the age of 14! He was the youngest member of that team playing in a league with kids ranging from ages 15-21. He continued his Junior hockey career until he was 21 where he moved around from different teams at higher leagues and winning wherever he went! Finally, he went off to Becker College in Worcester Massachusetts. He would end up playing for their NCAA Division III team the Hawks. Unfortunately, at the end of his freshman year Jerry started to get sick. This is when he found out he had esophageal cancer. This did not stop this young man. He vowed to fight it with a positive attitude and determination. After about a year of treatment Jerry was cancer free and cleared again to play hockey for the Becker Hawks! When he rejoined the team, he was an immediate impact to his team. Things started to look great for Jerry once again. In the summer of 2016 Jerry had follow up appointments and one of them came back with terrible news once again, he had cancer once again. Again, he took on his treatments with a positive attitude and determination. This time around it was just too much for him. But before he lost the fight he had one more accomplishment left in him. He could graduate and earn his baccalaureate degree in Sports Medicine. We lost "our boy" Jerry on January 23rd 2017, he was 25 years old. He was surrounded by his family and loved ones.
Our mission is to keep his memory and legacy alive! We are starting an annual charity alumni hockey game in Jerrys honor. We are having a BBQ style event with food, drinks, music, games and of course hockey! This event is open to the public and all money raised will be going to the Salgi Esophageal Cancer Research Foundation!
