When I was 5 I decided I wanted to raise money to help replace a police k-9 dog for our local police department. My mom and I went in to talk to them about it and they said the money had already been raised. So we asked if they had any other programs that needed help and they told us about the Shop With A Cop program. It sounded good to me so for my 5th birthday I asked for donations to that program instead of gifts from my friends. It was awesome - I raised $156.50 and a police man brought his car to my house! Since then I've picked other programs in need. One year my friends and I raised enough to donate a water buffalo through Heifer International. My biggest year was when we raised $1015 for our local food bank's backpack program!
I've selected the American Red Cross in the past because they do such good work and are very respected. They help people when emergencies strike. Well, this year Houston and southern Texas took a big hit from Hurricane Harvey. I wish I could go down there and help with the rescues and clean up but I'm not quite old enough....yet. But in September I'm having a birthday - I'm turning 16 - and I want to donate my birthday to helping the victims of Hurricane Harvey. Harvey is causing record flooding. The Red Cross is out in force trying to help those that have lost everything or have been evacuated for their safety. I'm putting out the challenge to raise $1600 dollars - my own record - to help the Red Cross help those in Texas!!! Please join me with a donation from those of us who can't get down there to lend a hand.
