The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation honors the sacrifice of firefighter Stephen Siller who laid down his life to save others on September 11, 2001. Stephen and hundreds of his fellow first responders were inside the Towers when they collapsed. They heroically gave up their lives that day for us all. In Stephen Siller's (FDNY) memory, the Foundation was started in 2001 to follow in his footsteps and do good by making a positive and lasting impact in the lives of others. Through the years, Tunnel to Towers has established many worthwhile programs and initiatives serving veterans, first responders, children and those in need during times of struggle and hardship.
Through our Building for America’s Bravest program, the Foundation constructs specially adapted, custom designed smart homes for our nation’s most catastrophically injured servicemen and women. Smart homes provide veterans with a new personal freedom by helping them regain their independence and improve quality of life. Each smart home provides a maintenance-free, high-tech residence that is equipped with everything the veteran needs.
Our goal is to give back to these heroes who have made extraordinary sacrifices for us and our country, and we aim to ensure they have homes that sufficiently provide for their needs and help re-establish their lives. Our program has grown significantly since its inception. As of today, we have delivered, started construction, or are in the preliminary stages of a total of 66 smart homes. In addition, we have committed to build, at minimum, 200 smart homes for our most severely injured veterans.
The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation is committed to fiscal responsibility, high ethical standards and exercises excellent stewardship of all funds and donor contributions. Our Foundation has achieved the highest rating, four-star, from Charity Navigator, the nation's largest and most-utilized evaluator of charities. Nearly 93 cents on every dollar goes to programs and administrative expenses are less than 5%.
