The Upstate Family Resource Center has been serving the Northern Spartanburg County area for over 10 years. Our mission is to contribute to a healthy and prosperous community by providing educational opportunities, engaging activities and support services that help families thrive. Our organization plays an important role in our community, providing immediate assistance such as food, financial assistance, Christmas and School Supplies as well as long term solutions such as Adult Education, Budgeting classes, connections for employment and more.
Our Financial Stability Program partners with families to improve financial literacy skills, prepare for gainful employment and build resilience to face the challenge of being financially stable. Our community benefits by having strong thriving families who contribute back to the community that has supported them.
One client we are working with is a single mother of 2 children. She receives SSI due to several medical conditions. We came to know her when she attended an “Increasing Your Self Esteem” class we were offering. As she told the instructor in the class, “I have just learned to accept that bad things happen to me in life.” Sadly, she has been taken advantage of by those who were supposed to be looking out for her. The father of her children left her when she was pregnant with her youngest child. He has been physically, verbally, and emotionally abusive to her, and although he works full time and makes good money, he refuses to pay child support.
With staff guidance, she has taken the steps to make changes and introduced to agencies that will help her in her circumstances. Through Harvest Family Ministries, our client applied for SNAP (Food Stamps) and Family Independence assistance, and she has also received help with food and baby items. A staff member has accompanied her to child support hearings to provide support. Many times we offered to give a box of food to her, but she adamantly refused stating that we had already done too much for her.
We were so humbled when our client sent a text to staff saying, “I want to thank you for all the help that you have given me and for being a good friend to me. It makes me want to cry, I never had someone that wants to help me so much.”
