Women make up more than 50% the United States population, but less than 20% of Congress. We Will Lead believes we can improve these number by addressing this problem from its root...this means starting with young girls.
Who Are We?
We Will Lead aims to help middle school girls see themselves as leaders in their communities now and in the future.
We Will Lead hosts daylong conferences introducing middle school girls to the field of politics and government.
Each conference focuses on leadership development including exposure to women leaders in politics. A large emphasis of the conference is placed on the model of women supporting women/girls supporting girls and development of self-confidence.
Why Middle School Girls?
Research has shown that:
-Middle school girls experience a depreciation in self-esteem due to differing statuses of genders in society, preferential treatment of boys in the classroom and gender role socialization
-Middle school girls have a difficult time identifying themselves as leaders
Most civic engagement programs focus on college-aged women and adult women. We Will Lead seeks to improve the number of women in politics in the future by addressing the issues of gender bias and confidence early on. We take a proactive rather than reactive approach.
At a We Will Lead Conference, each girl leader has the opportunity to:
1. Hear from women leaders in the sphere of politics and social change
2. Work with other girls from different backgrounds to develop and present their own community action project
3. Engage in open dialogue about the importance of girls supporting girls and societal pressures
4. Interact with college-age and young professional women mentors who facilitate small group discussions and activities
How Will My Donation Help?
This year We Will Lead is hosting conferences in three different locations. At We Will Lead, making sure our program is accessible to ALL girls is essential. Your donation will help fund the costs of hosting each conference (supplies, food, venue fees, etc.) and ensure that the conference is FREE for all participants.
