Over the summer, students from low-income communities lose more than two months in reading achievement, while their middle-class peers make slight gains. Compounded year after year, this "Summer Slide" is the leading contributor to the achievement gap.
We help close the achievement gap by transforming the Summer Slide into the Summer Stride! Readers to Leaders overarching goals are to prevent summer learning loss, foster self-confidence and nurture positive attitudes towards learning so students graduate from high school and attend college. Our reach extends far beyond the summer classroom and makes Readers to Leaders not just a literacy program, but a learning, family support, and community development program built on the foundation of reading.
