The Yoga Diversity Initiative (YDI) was founded in 2014 by Chanelle John, Trinity’s Yoga and Mindfulness Program Manager and co-founder Mike Kutter, with a goal of making yoga more accessible to communities of color in Boston. We know there are economic and cultural barriers that can make yoga and holistic wellness inaccessible to People of Color. We believe yoga teachers of color can play a critical role in bringing yoga to these communities. Our approach to addressing issues of access is to offer scholarships and mentorship for dedicated yoga students of color to attend yoga teacher trainings.
Since 2014, we’ve awarded 8 scholarships to yoga practitioners of color in Greater Boston. Our graduates are currently teaching in multiple Boston Public Schools, branches of the Boston Public Library, the Boys and Girls Club and YMCA of Roxbury, the Lynn Community Health Center, and more! In 2016, we began partnering with Trinity to increase our ability to provide a pipeline of well trained, culturally competent teachers of color to the Boston yoga community, as well as to offer yoga to youth in Trinity’s direct service programs. Today, YDI graduates are offering yoga to youth and staff at McCormack Middle School in Dorchester and supporting our Trinity’s yoga program at the Department of Youth Services.
Now we are celebrating our 5 fifth year! We’ve made an impact on increasing access to yoga for underserved communities of color in Boston, but with your support we could do much more. This September 28th and 29th, YDI co-founder Mike Kutter will be completing a long-distance bike ride from Boston to Provincetown to raise funds for YDI. Our goal is to raise $6000 to cover two yoga teacher training scholarships for the upcoming year. We hope that you can help by making a donation to Mike’s ride, so we can bring even more holistic healing to communities of color in our city. We appreciate your support!
