YWCA Elmira’s services offer a continuum of care to women, children, and families with many unique services. We offer the ONLY public pool in our community therapeutically heated to serve senior citizens with aquatic exercise classes and children with swim lessons. Open to the public 300 days per year, the pool has over 27,000 visits annually.
Our pool isn't just fun - it's instrumental in the lives of adult members with limited flexibility and muscle strength as well as children needing life saving swim lessons in our community which is surrounded by lakes and rivers.
The benefits of aquatic exercise include improving the cardiovascular system, increasing muscle strength, improving balance, building endurance, reducing stress and anxiety, and improving joint health - all of which are lacking in a large portion of our population. Low impact aquatic exercise is also a fun, safe way to address weight management and factors related to health conditions such as dementia, multiple
sclerosis, arthritis, fibromyalgia and many more.
As a nonprofit we keep our rates affordable and as such the costs of the pool are supplemented by donations, grants, and other YWCA programs. You can only imagine what it costs to keep 76,000 gallons of water at 90 degrees for 300+ days per year!
To be considered for a $97,000 Community Thrives grant from the Gannett Foundation that will help us continue operation of our community pool we must raise $6,000 by April 12th.
The YWCA pool has been proudly serving the community for 67 years and with community support we plan to continue this tradition for generations to come - please donate what you can to help us keep the pool viable!
