For over 35 years the YWCA of Northwest Ohio has provided survivors of domestic violence with a 24/7 safe place they can come to when they have made the decision to flee their situation.
Over the course of the past 6yrs. the YWCA of Northwest Ohio's Domestic Violence Shelter has delivered components of the Economic Empowerment Program for survivors in an effort to assist them to begin to reach some level of financial security. Survivors are allowed to determine their own course of action. The objective is to increase their knowledge of the tactics of financial abuse perpetrated by batterers against them; as well as to provide them with support, tools, resources and referrals and some of the obstacles they might encounter. The curriculum explores the different types of financial abuse, coercion, and why they are often some of the most powerful tactics used by batterers. Most importantly, when funding allows we have been able to provide match savings accounts.
