On Monday, October 16th, Brown Football will host the 10th annual Bench Press for Cancer on the Main Green. The annual event was created in 2004 to help former team captain Lawrence Rubida ’05 and his family pay for the medical bills associated with his battle against Ewing’s Sarcoma. Despite Lawrence’s passing, his former teammates and those that followed have lived by his credo “never quit." Over the years, hundreds of student-athletes, faculty and staff have continued the legacy of support to families affected by cancer raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Cancer Survivorship Program for Young Adults at the Miriam Hospital, the principal teaching hospital for Brown’s Warren Alpert Medical School.
Care at the Miriam Hospital doesn't end when the last cancer treatment finishes. The program, the first of its kind in Rhode Island, provides long-term evaluation, health education, and emotional support for the unique needs of young-adult cancer survivors—for the rest of their lives. A dedicated nurse practitioner works with survivors to help them live the healthiest, fullest lives possible once active treatment has completed.
We all know someone who has been affected by this terrible disease and it would mean so much to so many people if you took the time to help out with this event. Every donation and share means a great deal! Let’s rally around this cause as a Brown football family!
