Did you know that parents are still harassed for nursing in public? Even though 49 states, the District of Columbia, and the Virgin Islands now have laws protecting the right to breastfeed in public, parents still continue to be harassed for doing so. This unnecessary behavior must stop! Best for Babes® is taking action against nursing in public harassment. We believe in protecting the legal, civil and human rights of breastfeeding parents!
Best for Babes® is the first consumer-driven cause focused on righting the wrongs and the harm done to the millions of parents who each year suffer from the Breastfeeding Booby Traps ® — the cultural, legal and institutional barriers that prevent them from achieving their personal breastfeeding goals. In 2012 Best for Babes® developed and implemented the first FREE Nursing in Public (NIP) Hotline, which has revolutionized and increased our chances of quickly and more effectively accomplishing broad and lasting societal change! The Hotline is managed by a group of influential and well-versed volunteers who have faced NIP harassment themselves. They offer support and suggestions on how callers can harness their energy to help others by strengthening legislation, raising awareness about the rights of the breastfeeding pair, and fixing this problem! All calls are logged to ensure that there is documentation of each incident; however each case remains confidential.
The NIP Hotline receives approximately 500+ calls per year, but without financial support it cannot continue. Financial support assists with the ability to maintain a voice mail service that the volunteers can quickly access from their personal phones. It also helps to support the volunteers that manage the hotline to develop training materials for businesses and template letters that parents can issue to businesses describing their incident. Our team of volunteers at Best for Babes® work tirelessly to help every parent on a individual basis. We believe that each call that we take makes the world more breastfeeding-friendly. This hotline is an essential resource for parents and with your financial offering you can help ensure it continues to serve those in need.
“I experienced breastfeeding discrimination while nursing my daughter at my place of employment, the YMCA, on multiple occasions. It left me feeling violated and personally wronged. I called into the Best for Babes® breastfeeding harassment hotline shortly after. I was able to speak with a mother that had been through breastfeeding discrimination and understood what I was feeling. This truly calmed and comforted me. She also shared that I was one of the many callers experiencing breastfeeding discrimination from YMCAs, which was so shocking and enlightening. When the time came to go public with my discrimination story the Best for Babes® NIP Hotline volunteers were still there to guide me. They helped me overcome fears of speaking out. I am now able to help be a voice for other women who have endured this type of discrimination. With their help I have reached my goal of working with the Rhode Island American Civil Liberties Union to pursue effective legal change at the Ocean Community YMCAs. Without the help of Best for Babes® I would not of so easily had the resources and support to seek justice and shed light to the national issue of breastfeeding discrimination at YMCAs.” -Elizabeth Gooding, Ashaway, RI
